BEETHOVENHALLE CONCERT HALL

Bonn, Germany 2015-2021

The Beethovenhalle Bonn is an icon of German post-war architecture and one of the most important monuments to the history and culture of the Federal Republic of Germany. Based on a design by Siegfrid Wolske – a student of Hans Scharoun – the ensemble of various halls and foyers was created from 1955 to 1959, crowned by the curved copper roof of the rising large central hall. The external appearance is characterised by a carefully considered array of masonry, mosaics, natural stone and glass facades while exquisite materials from all over the world are applied to the interior. For the occasion of Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday in 2020, the building will be renovated and modernised to the highest level of preservation. The public areas as well as the park are to be restored according to the historical model. As a central element, the former small hall can be extended down creating a new, voluminous acoustically high-quality rehearsal hall for symphonic orchestras, whilst also being suitable as a chamber music hall. The backstage areas will be restructured according to current modern requirements, improving the building’s logistics and building technology and safety equipment will be brought up to date. Necessary interventions in the structure will clearly but respectfully distinguish themselves from the historical design. The visions from the founding years of the Federal Republic of Germany thus enter into a symbiotic unity with the contemporary interventions of modern architecture.
